Change Your PD, Change Your Schools.

The Liberatory Classroom is a learning design studio and thought partner dedicated to reimagining what education can be. We help educators, schools, and organizations design transformative learning experiences that cultivate curiosity, agency, belonging, and human flourishing.

Grounded in the belief that education can be a force for liberation and collective thriving, we provide professional learning, coaching, design labs, strategic planning, research, and keynote experiences that help educators design the conditions for joy and liberatory learning.

Dr. Kai Mathews is an educator, researcher, instructional designer, advocate, and founder of The Liberatory Classroom. With more than two decades of experience spanning K–12 classrooms, higher education, nonprofit leadership, and statewide policy, her work is dedicated to reimagining the art of teaching and learning.

Dr. Kai has taught middle school students, prepared future teachers, led statewide initiatives, designed learning experiences for thousands of educators, and has been a fierce advocate for policies that advance educational equity and teacher wellbeing. Across every role, one belief has remained constant: the art of teaching and learning has the power to transform lives, communities, and futures.

Her work sits at the intersection of liberatory pedagogy, project-based learning, human-centered design, restorative practices, systems change, and civic imagination. She partner with educators, schools, districts, nonprofits, and organizations to create learning experiences that cultivate belonging, curiosity, agency, joy, and purpose.

Our Philosophy

The revolution will be pedagogical.

We believe the future is shaped not only by what we teach, but by how we teach, who gets to participate, whose knowledge is valued, and what possibilities are made available to learners.

Our work is guided by seven core values:

  • Love, because meaningful learning begins with belonging and human connection.

  • Liberation, because education should expand opportunity, agency, access and ability.

  • Equity, because every learner deserves access to the conditions necessary for success and flourishing.

  • Wild Potential, because every person carries gifts, brilliance, and possibilities that cannot be measured by a test score.

  • Alchemy, because educators have the power to design schools that transform individuals, communities, and futures.

  • Creativity, because imagination is essential to innovation, problem-solving, and systems change.

  • Community, because we are interconnected, and our learning is strongest when it is social and emotional.

These values shape everything we do as we work toward learning environments where young people can show up fully, contribute meaningfully, and thrive collectively.

The Dream We Carry

We believe that every generation inherits two things: the world as it is and the possibility of creating something different. Pedagogy is not simply how we teach. It is how we shape relationships, cultivate belonging, nurture curiosity, distribute power, and help young people live empowered lives.

Every lesson teaches more than content. Every learning experience expands or constrains what students believe is possible and how they engage with the learning process.

At The Liberatory Classroom, we believe that transforming education begins by transforming the experiences we create for learners. Unfortunately, too many students leave school without ever experiencing the power of their own voice, imagination, or agency.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

We envision schools where learning is meaningful, relationships are authentic, belonging is foundational, and where joy and rigor coexist.

In these schools, educators are empowered as designers and young people are trusted as contributors, creators, and change-makers.

A different way of schooling is possible. Let us show you how!

Our Approach

The real question should be:What do I want my students to experience?…What do I want to experience?

Every learning environment creates an experience. It teaches students what is possible, how they belong, whose voices matter, and what role they can play in shaping the world around them. Whether intentional or not, every classroom is designing for something.

At The Liberatory Classroom, we help educators become intentional designers of learning experiences. We begin not with standards, programs, or compliance, but with the human experience we want to cultivate—curiosity, belonging, agency, joy, purpose, connection, courage, and intellectual challenge.

From there, we work backward to design the conditions, relationships, learning experiences, and systems that make those outcomes possible. We draw from research, design thinking, project-based learning, restorative practices, systems change, and liberatory pedagogy to create learning environments where young people are engaged and trusted as thinkers, creators, and change-makers.

We bring this vision to life through immersive professional learning experiences that invite educators to move beyond theory and into transformation. We create spaces where educators experience the very conditions we hope to cultivate for students—belonging, curiosity, creativity, reflection, collaboration, agency, and joy.

Educators leave not only with new strategies and tools, but with a deeper understanding of how to intentionally design experiences that nurture human flourishing, academic growth, and collective liberation.
